How to get your business cited in AI answers

Assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity now answer many buying questions directly. Here is how to become one of the sources they cite.

More buyers now ask an assistant before they ask Google. They type a full question – which accounting software suits a ten-person firm, who installs heat pumps near me, what a fair price is for a website redesign – and get a written answer that names a handful of providers and links to a few sources. Being one of those names is the goal of answer engine optimization (AEO).

Nobody controls what an AI model says, and anyone promising guaranteed AI citations is guessing. But the businesses that appear most often tend to do the same five things well.

1. Start with the questions buyers actually ask

AI answers are built around questions, so your content should be too. Collect them from the places where buyers speak in their own words:

  • Sales calls and discovery notes – the questions asked before someone buys
  • Support tickets and live chat transcripts
  • Search Console queries that contain who, what, how, best or vs
  • Reviews of you and your competitors, especially the complaints

Group them by buying stage. Early questions explain a problem, middle questions compare options, late questions check price, fit and risk. You need a clear, honest answer for each.

2. Make every key page answer-first

Assistants quote passages that answer a question directly. A service page that spends five paragraphs warming up gives them nothing to quote. Open with one or two sentences that answer the main question plainly, then support it with detail: who it is for, what is included, how long it takes, what affects the price and how you compare with the alternatives.

Specifics help. A page that says a project usually takes six to eight weeks and explains why is far more quotable than one that says timelines vary. Tables, short lists and clearly labelled sections make the structure obvious to people and machines alike.

3. Make your brand facts consistent everywhere

AI systems cross-check what different sources say about you. If your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn page and directory listings describe your services, locations or name differently, the model is less sure what you do and less likely to recommend you.

  • Use exactly the same business name, services and service areas everywhere
  • Add Organization structured data with links to your official profiles
  • Keep an About page that states plainly who you are, what you do and for whom
  • Update old directory listings rather than leaving them to contradict you

4. Earn mentions where your market reads

Assistants lean heavily on what others say about you: industry publications, comparison articles, review platforms, podcasts and community discussions. You cannot buy your way into these honestly, but you can earn them by publishing original data or opinions, contributing expert commentary, joining relevant directories and asking happy customers to review you on the platforms your buyers trust.

5. Keep the important pages easy to read

Pages that load slowly, rely on scripts to show their text or are blocked in robots.txt are harder for any crawler to use. Make sure your key pages render their content in the HTML, load quickly and are not accidentally blocked. Decide deliberately which AI crawlers you allow: blocking a search-focused crawler can keep you out of that assistant’s answers.

How to measure it

Measurement is still rough, so combine several signals. In your analytics, watch referral traffic from assistants such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Each month, run the same set of buyer questions through the main assistants and note whether you are mentioned and which sources are cited. Track branded searches, which often rise when assistants mention you. Look for trends over months, not single answers, because responses vary from one day to the next.

A quick checklist

  • A list of the buyer questions you want to be the answer to
  • Answer-first openings on your service and comparison pages
  • Consistent business facts across every profile, plus Organization schema
  • A plan to earn genuine third-party mentions
  • Key pages fast, crawlable and not blocked by accident
  • A monthly prompt test and AI referral tracking
